Wheel Chairs with Attitude
If you're in the market for wheel chairs, and really, why else would you be here, then I hope you have considered the many options that are available in motorized scooters and power chairs. There are many style options available to the average consumer today that haven't been traditionally available in the past.
In addition to the many styles and mobility options that are available, there are many payment plans that are available to enable the average consumer in getting the chair that will best suit their lifestyle needs as well as their mobility desires. The old wheel chairs of yester year don't offer the maneuverability that the modern scooters and power chairs offer, not to mention they aren't nearly as practical as they can't really handle that many terrain options.
If you have a younger child or teen that needs a wheel chair or mobility device of some sort, you may find that a power chair of mobility scooter is a great option as far as wheel chairs go. These allow your child to have a certain 'coolness' factor that wheel chair bound children haven't been able to have in the past. The sad truth is that children look at wheel chairs and see a handicapped person; they look at a mobility scooter and see someone that has a pretty cool ride.
For the elderly, these electric wheel chairs offer maneuverability and freedom from the isolation that attempting to move from place to place with a manually powered wheel chair simply does not accommodate. Isolation is one of the worst pitfalls of age, these chairs allow those who would have been home bound by their limitations to get out into the world and congregate with others. This freedom more than anything is well worth the price tag these specialized wheel chairs command.
I hope that if a wheel chair is one of your needs, you will strongly consider the freedom that a motorized wheel chair or power chair offers.

Vaccines, Mercury and Autism
There are a number of recent articles and studies regarding the connection between immunizations given to children and autism, which is a developmental disability characterized by anti-social behavior and repetitive movements. The main culprits are thought to be thimerosal and other mercury-based preservatives contained in some vaccines, but also include formaldehyde, aluminum phosphate, antibiotics, phenols, aluminum salts, methanol, isopropyl, 2-pheozyethanol, live viruses and "a host of known components considered off-limits as trade secrets," according to an article in the World Net Daily.
An article in The Hill on June 3, 2006 by Jeffrey Young reports that parents of autistic children are claiming a cover-up by the CDC on this link. The CDC responds on its website, "The weight of currently available scientific evidence does not support the hypothesis that vaccines cause autism. We recognize there is considerable public interest in this issue, and therefore support additional research regarding this hypothesis. CDC is committed to maintaining the safest, most effective vaccine supply in history."
The National Institutes of Heath has quadrupled its financing for research into this question since 1997. But last year the top three public health agencies held a press conference in which they stated that there was no proven link between vaccines and autism. They maintain it's more dangerous for children not to receive immunizations from diseases such as mumps, rubella and influenza. But many parents, as well as other researchers, are not convinced. There has been a reported 6000% to 13,000% increase in childhood autism since the 1990s, depending on the location. Before 1990, autism was rare, about one in every 10,000 children; now nearly one in every 150 children is being diagnosed, and this has prompted outrage and lawsuits in many communities. There is an outcry for more independent research, as many claim the government agencies are conspiring to "poison" our children with toxic levels of mercury and other chemicals.
Thimerosal was first introduced as a preservative in the 1930s by Eli Lilly. According to a study published in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons by Dr. Mark Geier, and David Geier, "U.S. infants are exposed to mercury levels [which] far exceed the EPA and FDA–established maximum permissible levels." They note a strong epidemiological link between neurodevelopmental disorders and mercury exposure. But despite the outrage, it hasn't been removed from many of the vaccines. Dr. Geier suggests that the rates of autism would decline so abruptly, the connection would become obvious and a deluge of lawsuits would follow. Several companies have even admitted the mercury levels contained within the vaccines are other than is what is stated on their labels – if this is truly the case who knows what else they're putting in there without our knowledge.
The United States is not alone in the controversy. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who has written a book and many articles on the subject, stated, "six years ago, autism was unknown in China. We started giving them our vaccines in 1999. Today there's 1.8 million cases of autism in China." Australia has experienced a 276% jump in autism disorders. Russia banned thimerosal from children's vaccines and their autism rates have remained unchanged. In the UK, where the mercury-based vaccine was introduced in 1989, the autism rate spiked from one in 2200 children in 1988 to one in 166 in 2001.
One anomaly exists within the Amish population, which doesn't take vaccines. Their autism rates are almost non-existent, certainly nowhere near the epidemic 1 in 166 proportions indicated elsewhere.
At least this possible mercury-autism link is being discussed openly today in our major media. However, it remains that parents are often coerced into allowing their children to be vaccinated and not told of these possible complications. In Maryland, parents on welfare lose $25 per month per child without immunizations – even though they are not legally required. Many school systems do not allow unvaccinated children to attend, and physicians often refuse to treat a child without them.
One must consider that the pharmaceutical industry is a business. Is it possible such a business would make even more money should people get sick from their vaccines? Do we really trust them to be working for our best interests, rather than their own? Did you know that Bayer, the company which makes Cipro, the treatment for Anthrax, started out in Germany working for Hitler? These companies are capitalists, not philanthropists. One shudders to think of the day vaccinations are required by law. Until then Surf the Tao, live every moment in love - even if others aren't.

Good information for lactose intolerance sufferers.
Having suffered with a lactose intolerant digestive system for over fifteen years, I wanted to pass along a bit of information that I think will be helpful to many lactose intolerance sufferers.

Lactase digestive enzymes are essential:
When the right kind and the right amount of a particular digestive system enzyme called lactase is present in the digestive system, the sugar in milk (called lactose) can be easily digested with no lactose intolerance symptom.
To digest lactose without a digestive problem such as bloating, cramps, gas, pain, diarrhoea etc. requires the lactase enzyme to be present in the digestive system in sufficient quantity to break down all of the lactose. Whether generated internally or taken as a supplement, lactase digestive enzymes are essential in the digestion of untreated dairy products.
As most lactose intolerance sufferers already know, lactase digestive enzyme supplements are the only way to ensure a pleasant experience with dairy products that have not had the lactose removed. What you might not know is that you may not need to take as much, or as high a dose, depending on the kind of dairy product you are consuming. This is useful, as lactase digestive enzymes can get very expensive over time.

Lactose intolerance levels vary in individuals:
Lactose intolerance levels vary widely from individual to individual. Some lucky folks can get by with having a little milk in a cup of tea, or having a slice of cheese now and then without it causing a digestive problem, while others become terrified at the mere thought of accidentally ingesting even a small amount of dairy product, because of the fear of suffering through the unpleasantness of a lactose intolerance symptom.

The lactose content of dairy products varies widely:
It might interest you to know what the approximate lactose content is for certain common dairy products. This can be helpful in many ways. For instance, you may be able to avoid taking quite as many lactase digestive enzymes (supplements) as you normally do, or you might be able to reduce the strength (potency) that you would normally take when consuming dairy products. This can add up to some fairly significant savings over time, and, if you are like I was, lactose intolerance can be a very expensive digestive disorder to deal with over time.

What is the lactose content in common dairy products?
By far the most Lactose is in plain old skim milk, followed by regular milk and chocolate milk. So these are the items that should concern you the most.
Next up, is ice cream and certain kinds of cheeses, although it should be noted that there is a vast difference between different cheeses which I'll get to in a moment. Butter, believe it or not, comes in rather low on the lactose content scale.
Given the following portions in these foods, the approximate lactose content in grams (g) is:
1 cup Skim Milk 12-14 (g)
1 cup Whole Milk 11 (g)
1 cup Chocolate Milk 10-12 (g)
1 cup Low-Fat Milk 9-13 (g)
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream 9 (g)
1 cup Low-Fat Cottage Cheese 7-8 (g)
1 cup Regular Cottage Cheese 5-6 (g)
1 cup Orange Sherbet 4 (g)
1 oz Cream Cheese 0.8 (g)
1 oz Colby Cheese 0.7 (g)
1 oz Blue Cheese 0.7 (g)
1 tablespoon Half and Half 0.6 (g)
1 oz Cheddar Cheese 0.4-0.6 (g)
1 oz Processed Swiss Cheese 0.4-0.6 (g)
1 oz Processed American Cheese 0.5 (g)
1 oz Camembert Cheese 0.1 (g)
2 pats Butter 0.1 (g)

Lactose content in common cheeses:
The younger and least ripe of the cheeses pose the highest problems for lactose intolerance sufferers. The older the cheese, the less lactose it contains. Therefore parmesan and very old cheddar contain relatively little lactose. Here is a list of some relatively Low-Lactose Cheeses: Swiss, American, Roquefort, Provolone, Parmesan, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella, Gouda, Colby, Cheddar, Brick, Blue, Caraway, Gruyere and Fontina.
Relatively high on the lactose content list are cheeses like: Sapsago, Ricotta, Cottage, Mysost and Primost.
Yogurt is usually quite tolerable for the lactose intolerant:
While this isn't true for everyone with this digestive problem, it does appear to be true for most lactose intolerant people. They can usually tolerate yogurt quite well. I think the trick is to make sure that you only consume yogurt which contains active bacterial cultures. It appears that the live cultures (beneficial bacteria) in yogurt can play an important role in the breaking down of lactose. Therefore, if you can consume yogurt easily, do it often, as it's widely recognised as one of the best foods for an overall healthy digestive system.
As incredible as it sounds, I no longer need to worry about the lactose in dairy products, lactase digestive enzyme supplements, a lactose free diet and the attendant misery, extra cost and hassle of this unfortunate digestive disorder.
It's true, I no longer suffer from lactose intolerance. You probably think I'm just trying to sell you something, or that it's only temporary, or that I'm just lying. I assure you that I no longer suffer from lactose intolerance.
I would never have believed this to be possible myself, a few years ago, and I'd resigned myself to a lifetime of trying to manage the digestive problem with as much of a lactose free diet as possible and lactase digestive enzymes with every meal that I wasn't 100% sure about.
While I'm not saying that what happened to me will be true for everyone, I now strongly believe that for a large percentage of the lactose intolerant population, Lactose Intolerance can be beaten with a simple reconditioning of the digestive system.
Once the digestive system is reconditioned, the body will produce enough of
the lactase digestion enzymes on it's own, and, as has been my experience, permanently prevent lactose intolerance symptoms without the need for a lactose free diet or expensive lactase digestive enzymes.
